What the number is
Miles times the standard rate is the deduction a self-employed driver may claim for business use of a car under the standard mileage method, and the amount an employer may reimburse tax-free under an accountable plan. The rate stands in for fuel, maintenance, insurance and depreciation; business parking and tolls are claimed separately.
Keeping the miles defensible
The IRS expects a record made at or near the time of each trip: date, destination, business purpose and miles, kept for as long as the return can be examined, generally three years. Odie records that in the background; by hand, start from the mileage log template.
Estimates for record keeping, not tax advice. Your tax preparer knows your situation. What Odie does with these rates is on the United States page.
Questions
Why does 2026 have two periods?
The IRS set 72.5 cents per mile for January to June 2026 and 76 cents from July 1. A log that crosses July 1 needs the miles split by date; the split year post explains what to change on that day.
Can I deduct this as an employee?
Generally no. Unreimbursed employee expenses are suspended under federal law, with exceptions for armed forces reservists, qualified performing artists and fee-basis government officials. The standard rate serves the self-employed and employer reimbursements under an accountable plan; see Publication 463.
Standard rate or actual expenses?
For a car you own, you choose in the first year it is used for business; if you start with actual expenses you cannot switch to the standard rate later for that car. Parking and tolls for business are added on top of either method.
Does anything I type leave this page?
